Numeracy in the Early Years

Children are very capable of learning mathematical concepts, especially through play based learning and interactions with peers and teachers. Specifically, our Numeracy Program encourages children to:

  • Develop numeracy skills through play and investigation
  • Develop a growing ability to use different strategies to solve problems, for example puzzles, building blocks, games
  • Have an understanding that numbers have meaning
  • Understand concepts related to measurement, for example length, weight, height
  • Use language associated to position – eg. on, under, next to
  • Actively join in counting games and songs
  • Recognise numbers and count objects
